It
has been speculated that glacial movement during the ice age, is responsible
for the deficiency of selenium in the top soils of the Great Lakes Region.
Furthermore
as early as 1936, US Senate Document # 264 stated that the grazing and crop
lands of the USA had been depleted of minerals.
"The alarming
fact is, that the grain and hay that we are now producing on millions of
acres of land no longer contains enough minerals to provide our equine
population with the necessary raw materials to sustain normal body
functions".
This
Great Lakes Region farm located in some of Michigan's beautiful horse country,
produces hay
that looks wonderful. Soil analysis reveals however that this
field yields hay that is woefully deficient in phosphorous and has no
traceable levels of selenium, magnesium, copper, iron and manganese.
